Special guests Ledah Finck and Eli Greenhoe. This duo met at summer camp a decade ago, where they formed a bond over their love of folk music and composing. Now reunited in NYC, the two are working together to create the music they’ve been dreaming of for a long time that glides between Americana, fiddle, experimentation, and improvisation.

Sxip's Hour Of Charm- Sunday Feb. 16 7pm

I am thrilled to be performing at Sxip's Hour Of Charm this Sunday at National Sawdust, 7pm. I’ll be performing my new string quartet piece called “Mother Pearl”. It’s a night filled of beautiful women composers and musicians and of course the one and only host Sxip Shirey!!

SXIP SHIREY'S HOUR OF CHARM:
MOTHER TREE PRAYERS
A night of haunted songs and surprising sounds

National Sawdust

80 N 6th St, Brooklyn, NY 11249

"Shirey’s works embrace improvisation, a quirky strain of humor and an unusual palette that often includes blends of disparate timbres (harmonicas and a sousaphone, for example) or electronic sounds cobbled together from the sampled sounds of things like frying chicken, squeaking chairs, and ice cubes clinking in wine glasses."— San Francisco Classical Voice

Sxip’s Hour of Charm is iconoclastic composer, performer, and producer Sxip Shirey’s ongoing art variety show, now in its 17th year. Part of the lineage of art cabaret in New York City that began with punk cabaret and Klaus Nomi, this installment features excerpts from Precipice, an object-theater piece/chamber opera from visual artist Susan Zeeman Rogers; Laura Serna singing a Mexican Lament; Aimee Curl singing Baby Dee’s “The Robin’s Tiny Throat”; and much more.

Baby Dee @ National Sawdust

One of my hero's Baby Dee!! She is a beautiful songwriter that has inspired me so much. I actually wrote a paper about her in my Women and Music class at Brooklyn College! And on February 23rd I'll be doing one of her songs at National Sawdust with Ilusha Tsinadze. She'll be doing a whole set. Come and catch her she's not here often!

Baby Dee is an enchanting song writer, classically trained harpist, circus sideshow veteran, and west side street legend Her infectious cackle and extraordinary talent on piano, harp and accordion has caught her many musical admirers including Will Oldham, Matt Sweeney, Maxim Moston, and Andrew WK, all of whom have produced unique and magnificent albums for her.

With special guests, including London composer Sarah Angliss and her robotic carillon, Theo Bleckman with Rima Fand, Sarah Alden with Ilusha Tsinadsze, baroque singer Lacy Rose, Blake Norris and your host Erin K. Orr.

When the Night Fell Away from the Sea [Music] | Sarah Alden and Kyle Sanna

Moments are periods of attunement to the now as it moves through time. A moment is the hourglass of shared experience between one’s awareness and one’s environment, often set against an emotional landscape.

Interacting with nature is to be continually reminded of the many systems operating beyond our control. There is no way to pause or replay nature’s processes. When the clouds open, when the fish jumps, when thunder wakes us, we have the choice to pay attention. These moments do not demand our attention, but in giving our attention they dissolve the boundaries between our selves and our environment.

Fire sloths are Brooklyn dwellers known for burning with passion while moving extremely slowly, hence named "fire sloths". They create beautiful and mysterious music while hunting for ants.

The Fire Sloth Music Series is a weekly celebration of their existence in the form of two sets of creative music performed by local sloths and humans.

Secret City

This Sunday we gather in New York City, the theme is DIRT, perfect for this mulchy, muddy moment of the year. Here's our roster of artists and performers:

  • Multi-disciplined artist, Dove Drury Hornbuckle will share ceramics, sculpture and drawings
  • John Brodeur, who plays in The Secret City Band, will present a number of his own as our featured musical guest
  • The lovely Marianne Cohen will present her famous apple butter
  • Our dear Stephanie Summerville will read the Cultural Calendar
  • One of our favorites, Sarah Alden will play the fiddle and there will be some flatfooting!
  • The wonderful poet Lee Ann Brown will read a poem called DIRT
  • And I think we're going to play a game about GOSSIP.

There will be a bunch of songs about DIRT and a story about a trip to the southwest--a dirt colored wonderland.
